Improper operation of electrical installations can cause major damage. Most companies use instructed personnel to carry out simple operational and maintenance tasks until electrical professionals arrive. An instructed person is adequately instructed – or supervised by an expert – so that he or she is able to perceive risk and to avoid danger.
Prerequisite for the use of instructed personnel
The company's need for instructed personnel shall be stated in the competence mapping and updated annually. Only expert and instructed personnel shall have access to distribution boards containing:
- circuit breakers, fuse load separators or other operating equipment intended only for expert/instructed personnel; and/or
- has feeding course (feed) above 250 A; and/or
- outgoing rates greater than 125A; and/or
- has a degree of enclosure lower than IP2XC
All enterprises are obliged to have an up-to-date overview of instructed personnel, which contains names and which facilities they can serve.
Instructed personnel shall be given annual training, and must also be followed up by an expert person with a clear understanding of what is served by whom and how. There shall be a clear instruction describing the handling and limitation of tasks that instructed personnel can perform – without the risk of this reducing personal and plant safety.
